Mash-ups are usually associated with underground record shops, bootleg white-labels and mixtapes changing hands between those in the know.

Now, EMI has decided to change all of that and after a clearance process of biblical proportions, bring these explosions of creativity, and massive cut-up tracks to the masses - legally.

This is the first fully legal mash-up album of it's kind, and features amongst others: Madonna vs A Taste Of Honey, Blondie vs The Doors, David Bowie vs Liberty X, Malcolm McLaren vs Franz Ferdinand, and Duran Duran vs Kelis all battling it out.

MASHED is released on Monday Feb 12th 2007

Watch the TV advert aswell as visiting the DON of the mashups Mark Vidler a.k.a GOHOME Productions.

Nice one Mark and thankyou EMI Smilie_PDT

IMHO another nail for the mashup genre. not only am i personally getting tired of mashups as well as everybody else (i know that certain genres never bought into it, even thougfh i certainly spun my fair share, nevertheless) there was a time when the only place you can find a mash was in Tennessee or Louisiana (sorry an USA reference to the prohibition era). now anybody with a paypal account or the link to http://crooklynclan.net (props out to them) can have the latest mashes. no problem with that just another reason for us to find a way to distinguish from the next guy.

peace out..........

Personally, I think that many mash-ups show more creativity than most of the crud being cranked out by the Mighty Music Machine. They might actually help save pop music as we know it. Britney or Paris sure won't.

I, for one, am very glad EMI took this bold step. Eventually more labels will follow. Recently, while attending Bootie LA, I was discussing the genre with a record executive. I called her out, saying that the labels are still fixated on downloads hurting the industry and the feeble attempts they make at trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube. (Clearly, the major labels reaping what they sowed for years - screwing everyone: the artists, the consumers, and even the stores...helping to drive them to bankruptcy - well, that's another subject entirely.) But I suggested that instead of fighting works of genius like 'Dean Gray', they should embrace the genre and make ALL instrumentals and acapellas available for an inexpensive, legal download. I mean, how much are they making on millions of tunes sitting in vaults? They collect dust, but no revenues. Make it ALL available - including 'pellas and 'mentals - and all those nickels and dimes on stuff that's generating NOTHING will all add up quite nicely. Plus, there should never again be any such thing as 'discontinued'. Make it available and someone will want it and pay for it. The internet removes the hassle and expense of printing up newer copies, so it's all just gravy!

Her face lit up with inspiration. It was like no one ever had that idea before and she actually seemed rejuvinated. Soon, as the major labels wise up, perhaps this site will become a major conduit for those bits and pieces. EMI is not the first (Madonna, Bowie, Jay-Z, Cirque de Soliel, etc. and others were doing it before them), but this IS high profile and can only do good things for the genre and all of us 'bedroom producers' as well.

In the meantime, thank God we have acapellas4u!

Hey Dude, Duder, The Dude, His Royal Dudeness,

You make many valid points about the industry. I have always wondered why they have yet to figure this out in regards to classics collecting dust in the dark and dingy vault.

hi, i'm new to this site, but i think it's great. i've been a dj for way too long. you'd think i would have found out about sites like this sooner...
in regards to the whole "mash up as the savior to pop music" thing.... hmmm... obviously, the whole music industry is gonna have to evolve with the times. but the companies that control the celebrity industrial complex are not going to change overnight. they see they can make x amount of dollars from putting out a certain kind of artist, and then they'll see how much money they make from putting out a mash up record, where they don't own any of the publishing.
mashups are made up entirely of other peoples material. It's gotta be a legal nightmare sorting out a legitimate mash up release. If a label did a mash up project with material they already owned, that might make it a little easier for the lawyers. It might limit the creative process, like the way the material for label released mix cds never sound as good as when you hear the same dj spinning unresctricted, live in the club. if a mash up record sells a few million copies, the industry will take notice. They'll have no problem putting out mashup albums when it involves 2 successful entities working together, such as in the case of jay-z and linkoln park.
(side note: i find it really annoying that danger mouse, who's whole career was jump started by using jay-z's vocals for his "grey album", hasn't given new, up and coming producers the same opportunities by releasing an acapella version of st. elsewhere. wut's up with that?")
Ultimately, I'm still more of a fan of a plain ol', new song. besides, you need new music to make new, relevant mash ups, right? just call me master of the obvious.

That's why the post: celebrating the first major step in that direction. It's not much different than the oil/car industry situation: we are running out of oil and need to look for alternative fuels NOW! All you need is one oil company and one car company to step up and start the 'next big thing' and the rest of the money-hungry corporate sheep will follow. In the case of music, there is 'lost' money to be found after all....

Ahh, but they've been doing it with hip hop samples for almost two decades. But again, we're back to 'permission', and why wouldn't one give it when there's more money to be made?

AMEN!
But fame has never caused anyone to forget where they've come from before, hazzit? Rolling Eyes

AMEN again!
But hopefully with less cookie-cutter-Velveeta-formula tunes for the masses. eh?

Well for me I see it like this...When working on a mash up project, I choose songs that I enjoy, and choose artists I respect..not trying to steal their glory, just giving my spin on things...while at the same time bringing something to the people that is different.

or, you know, you could download mashups for free from people who don't steal other peoples' ideas

p.s. just to be clear this post was not in regards to GHP's album. i fully support getting tracks cleared and selling cds. just not charging 3.99 for a mashup where nunavut goes to the artists
