If you want simple stuff then Windows movie maker hehe,
if you want more advanced from above than Vegas which is in my opinion for beginners one of the best software for video editing. Good for making music videos and really easy to master. (I think im gonna prepare some tutorials for Vegas). All though its sequencer its kinda poor but still effective.
More pro like stuff are Premier and Final cut that are often used in companies. Ive been working most of the time with Premier but now we switched to Final cut.
More options like importing more stuff in my opinion but also with its flaws.
Main thing you gotta learn about Premier is CTRL+S (SAVE) cause it is crashing like hell.
Thats small overview of those commonly used video editing software.

I've been using Vegas a lot lately and would certainly recommend it. The main reason I like it, quite aside from the fact that it didn't cost me anything, is that I found it very easy to master the basics - its interface is a lot like ACID, which is my main audio tool, so that helps a lot. It does do some odd things once in a while but I find these problems fairly easy to work around.
For Videoediting i use Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, which is a pretty solid but hard to get used to program. A while back i used Vegas, too... but im happier with PP CS3. For sound editing i use pretty basic stuff like audiacity (free) and sony soundforge.
